The mission of the library media program of the Portland Public Schools is to promote literacy and to ensure that students become effective users of ideas and information, equipped with the necessary skills and desire to become lifelong learners.
At Longfellow School, we want students to love books and reading and to become independent learners. In addition to books, we have magazines and audiobooks that students may check out. We also work to provide our teachers with the resources they need for their classrooms.
Kathy Hanley
Library Media Specialist
Students from all grades are welcome to use Longfellow's library independently, as often as needed. Student circulation varies according to grade level. Materials are borrowed for two weeks and may be renewed. We do not charge fines for late books. Parents are also welcome to borrow library materials at any time.
Catherine Ferguson
Education Technician
K-2 classes visit the library media center on a weekly basis to listen to stories, learn about the library and exchange books. Students in grades 3 - 5 visit the library in small groups or as an entire class for research projects, booktalks and a variety of other activities.
