Dear Families,

Summer in Maine is so fun and exciting!  We hope that you are enjoying this time with your children and experiencing all that Maine has to offer.  We are writing because August 30, 2017, is a few weeks away, and we want to share some important “back to school” information with you.

Sarah Sirois, our new Assistant Principal, and I have been working closely this summer reflecting on all that makes Hall School such a wonderful place.  In preparation for our transition to the new building, we have been thinking about what has been accomplished to grow our school community into one united community.  We are looking forward to all that lies ahead during the 2017-2018 school year, as we continue to plan for this new phase that we have entered.

Our construction project is going very well.  The foundations have been poured and the grounds are developing.  We have been without water to the building since the beginning of July, but hope to have this back in the next couple of weeks.  We are working on an expansion of the playground growing into the woods behind the swings, to compensate for the loss of the ball field where the new building is located.  It is all very exciting.

In addition to Assistant Principal Sirois, we have two new staff members.  Ms. Beth Spinney is coming over to be our half-time literacy coach, so we will have a full-time coach on staff next year. Beth will share the position with our current part-time literacy coach, Tracy Warren.  Beth has been a literacy coach in the district for many years.  She brings extensive experience to us and we look forward to working with her.  We also welcome Owen Murphy as our new Spanish teacher.  Owen has been a Spanish teacher in the district for a few years and comes to us from Riverton School.  He is replacing Ms. Gimeno, who is on a sabbatical this year.

We would like to share some important dates with you as you think about the launch of this new school year.  The first very important date is
August 22, 2017, from 5:30pm to 6:30pm for our Kindergarten Play Date on our playground.  This is an opportunity for all new kindergarten students and families to come and meet a new friend as we get ready to start our new school year.  We hope that you will join us.

August 29, 2017, our PTO is hosting a “Welcome Back to School Ice Cream Social” on our playground from 5:30pm to 6:30pm. Everyone is welcome!  The first day of school for students in grades one through five is August 30, 2017.  There is no school on Friday, September 1, 2017 or Monday, September 4, 2017.  School begins for everyone (pre-k through grade five) on Tuesday, September 5, 2017.

Our school hours will remain as they were last year.  We have supervision on the playground beginning at
8:30am and we encourage students to come and play before the bell rings.  Our bell to enter the building rings at 8:50am and our day officially begins at 9:00am.  Dismissal will be at 3:30pm.  Finally, School Picture day is Wednesday, September 20, 2017.  We will send more information as we begin the school year.

We have also scheduled our Open House for Thursday,
September 28, 2017, from 5pm to 6pm.  This is the night reserved for visiting your child's classroom and learning more about the new school year.  Also, scheduled for the same evening is our Pot Luck Dinner from 6pm to 7:30pm. We hope that you will join us for these important events.  We also have conferences in November which result in two half days.  These half days are scheduled for November 20, 2017 and November 21, 2017.  Dismissal on these days will be at 12:00pm.

This year we will continue our work growing into one united community as we transition to our beautiful new building.  We will be planning for specific processes that support our commitment to our four pillars: multi-year relationships with teachers, project based learning, community engagement and the sense of a small community within a larger community.  We will be providing you with updates through our monthly PTO meetings, so we hope that you will come and learn more about our exciting transition to the new Hall School.

Enjoy summer and please call us if you have any questions.
