Writing Workshop
The students at Hall learn to write well in three different genres  - Narrative, Persuasive, and Informational.  They participate in a writing workshop model that supports the writing process. The writing workshop model enables teachers to focus on the strengths and needs of each individual writer.  During this workshop time teachers provide direction instruction on the writing process, writing craft, and mechanics.  Teachers also meet with individual students and small groups, meeting the needs of the individual learner. Students help determine their writing goal with their teacher.  Students have lots of opportunities to write and apply the strategies they have learned. One of our big goals for children is to ensure they can communicate effectively through writing and feel confident in their writing capabilities.

Reading Workshop

Hall students take part in a daily reading workshop model where they get to self select books that are “just right” for them.  A “just right” book is one where they can read/decode words and understand the book comfortably.  The students have ample time to read and work on their goals, whether they are word solving, building fluency, or in comprehension.  Like the writing workshop model, the teacher starts with a direct lesson and students spent time reading following that, while the teacher meets with individual students and small groups.  This allows her/him to meet the individual needs of every student.  We formally and informally assess students throughout the year so we are able to know what reading level they are on and set appropriate goals.  One of our big goals for children is to ensure they love reading and become  life long readers.
